What is stress alopecia and how can it be helped?
Stress alopecia is hair loss caused by extreme stress.
There are many stress-related health issues that cause hair loss such as:
- Telogen effluvium. In telogen effluvium (TEL-o-jun uh-FLOO-vee-um), significant stress pushes large numbers of hair follicles into a resting phase. Within a few months, affected hairs might fall out suddenly when hair is combed or washed.
- Trichotillomania. Trichotillomania (trik-o-til-o-MAY-nee-uh) is an irresistible urge to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas of your body. Hair pulling can be a way of dealing with negative or uncomfortable feelings, such as stress, tension, loneliness, boredom or frustration.
- Alopecia areata. A variety of factors are thought to cause alopecia areata (al-o-PEE-she-uh ar-e-A-tuh), possibly including severe stress. With alopecia areata, the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles and causes hair loss.
When I met my new client, she was on leave from the U.S. Army and had been serving for five years. Her hair had begun to thin and fall out from the stress of combat. She was left with a lower density of hair than she normally had. She told me how the hair loss had been affecting her confidence in her appearance. I knew there was an opportunity to help someone who truly deserves the finest hair care possible.
Since her hair did have a coarse, strong cuticle, which is the dimension of the strand in diameter, she was a great candidate for tape-in hair extensions. Tape in hair extensions are light and do not cause stress to damaged hair when applied correctly. I chose to use Hot Heads Hair Extensions because they have a natural body wave to blend the areas of concern, yet also have a weightless product to apply to her low-density hair.
